The light pollution that blankets Honolulu is getting worse as temperatures rise, officials said Friday.
Hawaii has a long history of dealing with the effects of high levels of ultraviolet light pollution, but the latest episode is getting more intense, Honolulu police said.
The city has already started using the state’s new sun-blocking sun shield.
Police say the problem began last month when a construction crew moved a solar panel into a residential neighborhood.
Residents complained of an odor and a smoky smell.
Police investigated and found that a nearby power plant, owned by the city of Honolulu, was emitting harmful UV light.
They found that the construction company had installed a large solar panel on a street corner near a home, according to police.
The panels are meant to help the city capture and capture light pollution.
That’s what caused the city to install a solar filter that shields the street from light pollution for about a month, officials say.
The mayor of Honolulu says the city’s work on the filter will help protect people who live in the area.
“It’s not just a solar project,” Mayor Linda Lingle said in a press release.
The mayor also said that a solar-based filter that protects the street would be put on the streets of the city by the end of the year. “
We are working with the local utility to improve the filtering technology so we can have a filter that is more reflective, so we don’t see all the light that’s coming through.”
The mayor also said that a solar-based filter that protects the street would be put on the streets of the city by the end of the year.
Lingle says the project will help the department cut its emissions by about 40 percent and save more than $5 million.
“I think it’s a really good thing for the city,” Lingle told CNN affiliate KHON.
“You want to be as efficient as possible.
We have some really good engineers working on this project, and it’s going to save the city money.”
Officials say the city is working with a private contractor to install the filter, but they have no idea when it will be operational.
The sun-protection solar filter was installed in late January in a neighborhood on the west side of the street where people live.
Officials say it’s one of many projects that will be rolled out throughout the city in the coming months.
