The internet is a beast of a thing.
It’s the backbone of our lives, a tool that allows us to communicate with family and friends, work from home, travel abroad, and get on a plane.
Yet, as of March 2020, most people don’t have access to it, and the internet can’t be turned on, much less charged, at home.
It can’t access your social media feeds, read your emails, or download games and apps.
And if you don’t own a laptop, you probably won’t be able to make use of all the features of a new one that’s available for a fraction of the price.
And while the cost of a computer is skyrocketing in the United States, it’s also soaring around the world, especially in Canada.
While it’s expensive to buy a new computer, there are some things you can do to make sure you’re getting the best deal on the best computer possible.1.
Get a new home router and add more security to your home network.
If you’re new to home networks, you’re likely to be using the old internet to connect to your old computers.
And it’s not an ideal scenario.
Most home routers come with built-in firewalls that can protect your data from malicious software and viruses, but some routers may also have additional security features that you may not want.
The best home routers offer features like IPV4 (Internet Protocol Version 4), which can prevent unwanted traffic from reaching your home, or MAC address-based security, which can keep your home Wi-Fi network secure from hackers.
If these features aren’t in your router, you can also try out new router-based home security products like FirewallPlus or FirewallMax, which are both built-into home routers.2.
Use a VPN.
A VPN (virtual private network) is a way for you to access the internet anonymously.
With a VPN, you don:Connect to the internet through a private networkYou’re not on the same internet as the person you’re connecting toConnect to your private network from outside your homeYou can access the Internet from outside of your homeThe only way to get access to your online account from outside is to use a VPN with an ISP (Internet Service Provider).
The more secure your connection, the easier it is to get around these restrictions.3.
Set up a home network for maximum privacy.
If your home is an office or small apartment, setting up a VPN connection is an easy way to protect your personal information.
Set-up a home VPN on your laptop or desktop, then log into your account at home using the IP address associated with the VPN.
For example, if you have a home IP address of 192.168.0.10, enter 192.16.0:8080 in your browser and you’ll be greeted with a page that looks like this:Once you log in, you’ll see your personal details appear at the top of your screen.
Click on the VPN icon and it will pop up a list of your connected devices.
If all of your devices are connected to the VPN, it’ll also be able do a quick scan of your VPN connection to see if it can access your accounts.4.
Set the settings on your home router.
If the VPN doesn’t automatically detect your IP address, you might have to set up your router to do so.
Open your router’s settings and check the “Show Advanced Settings” box.5.
Set your VPN password.
A password is one piece of information that allows your VPN to access your account.
To set your VPN’s password, open the settings and click on “Edit.”
From there, enter your password, then click “Save.”
If you don and you need to change your password to protect any sensitive information, set a new password for your VPN.6.
Connect your new laptop or home router to your existing internet connection.
Make sure you have the latest firmware available for your new home network router.
The latest firmware can be found at the router’s manufacturer’s website.7.
Set a timeout between your new router’s login and your VPN logins.
When your VPN is first connected, the router will send a request for the password and username, so the router can connect.
After your VPN logs in, the next time it connects, the VPN will use the old password and logins, allowing you to set a time limit.
Once the time expires, your VPN should start reconnecting and logging in automatically.8.
Set privacy settings on the new home.
If there’s no privacy settings available on your new computer or router, make sure to set the privacy settings.
On the new computer screen, select “Privacy.”
On the next screen, choose “Allow other users to connect through my home network.”
When the settings are set, your new IP address will be hidden from other users and will not be visible on other people’s devices.9.
Turn off your VPN, but
