The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that ultraviolet radiation is safe and effective for the treatment of ultraviolet sunburn.
But the agency has said the government should take more steps to promote the use of ultraviolet therapy.
“If we don’t take the steps to reduce our exposure, UVF will become the new cancer,” said Dr. Susan G. Komen for the Cure President Mary Kay Henry in a statement Monday.
She added that the U.N. has “made great strides in reducing the risk of skin cancer” but it needs more resources to get the treatment to people.
In 2015, the World Health Organization reported that ultraviolet rays cause more than 100,000 premature deaths each year in the U .
S. and over 1 million deaths worldwide.
U.S.-based solar panels and solar filters can be used to help protect against the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation.
